DNS or the domain name service is a piece of software which uses a lookup table to relate computers on a physical network to domain and computer names. DNS sits on top of TCPIP or Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol where each individual NIC (network interface card) in a computer in a network is given a unique 4 number code a typical code may be 184.108.40.206. For more information please see my article ‘Networking 101’.
Access control and ekspres vpn features could allow your employees to securely work from customer locations, on the move or even allow you upload holiday shots from Orlando back to home when the memory card nears capacity e.g. Billion BiPAC 7402GX.
Cyberduck: This FTP software is easy to use and has accessible bookmarks that enable you to browse quickly through files and content. The best part is that it is open source and available free.
A few years ago it was proved that all DNS nameservers had an inherent flaw that would allow hackers to substitute true IP web addresses for fake ones. It was agreed that the exploit would be kept secret until all the DNS nameservers had been updated to protect against this exploit. The word got out, and today there are still many nameservers that haven’t been updated. Here’s a possibility of what could happen: If my banks website log in page had an IP address of 220.127.116.11, a hacker could potentially replace that IP with the IP of an identical log in that the hacker controlled. If my computer used that nameserver to get the IP for the browser, then I would be sent to the fake log in page…damage done.
You can also get a broadband router that is really three devices in one box. First, there’s the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There’s also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect wired-Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.
Cable/DSL users: If you have a dial-up modem installed on your PC, try to test using a dialup connection. Either use dialup to an ISP and then use VPN.
I would set up one machine to be the DNS server which contains a lookup table with a list of the names of computers in the domain along with their TCPIP addresses for example mycomputer may be listed next to the 18.104.22.168. This means that if I ping the DNS server with the name mycomputer I will get back 22.214.171.124. It is also possible to give the IP address and get back the name of the computer with this address, this is known as a reverse lookup.
Of course, these HP gizmos are wireless ready. You can use it anywhere where there is a hotspot like restaurants and coffee shops. And since it has USB ports, you can also connect to the internet by using a USB wireless dongle. If there is no hotspot available, you just plug the dongle in and you’re online.
